October is Fair Trade Month!
Sorry, I missed this for the last newsletter, but you can go on celebrating! Break out of calendular restraints and celebrate fair trade year 'round, just like we celebrate women and black history! Visit the TransFair Bake Sale, and their Connect With Trade web site. If you're looking for ways to celebrate and spread the word about Fair Trade, Co-op America's latest Guide to Fair Trade is chock full of advice, and is now available as a printed booklet, in addition to an online download. Thanks to all of our members who made an extra contribution to move this popular guide from online to hard copy. It will now go to communities all over the country to accelerate Fair Trade everywhere – and will be available to everyone at our fall Green Festivals™.
What's more, you can now take action to make your town a Fair Trade town, following in the footsteps of towns in Pennsylvania, Vermont, and all across Europe.
If that's not enough, here are three more ways to make trade fair in October:

  • Make it a Fair Trade Halloween—If you hand out candy for Halloween, plan ahead to offer Fair Trade chocolate, a sweet treat that protects people and the planet. Find chocolate companies in our National Green Pages™.
  • Take action with your supermarket—Thousands of Co-op America members have already taken action, and the success reports are starting to roll in. Use Fair Trade month as an opening to talk to your grocer about stocking more Fair Trade products.
  • Hold a Fair Trade house party —Serve Fair Trade snacks, display Fair Trade products from around the world, and make it fun for your guests to pay attention to where things come from. Two of our green business members, Pachamama and A Greater Gift, even offer kits and supplies to make it easy for you.

60 minutes report

A Life Saver Called “Plumpynut”

(CBS) You've probably never heard a good news story about malnutrition, but you’re about to. Every year, malnutrition kills five million children—that's one child every six seconds. But now, the Nobel Prize-winning relief group “Doctors Without Borders” says it finally has something that can save millions of these children.

It's cheap, easy to make and even easier to use. What is this miraculous cure? As CNN's Anderson Cooper reports, it's a ready-to-eat, vitamin-enriched concoction called “Plumpynut,” an unusual name for a food that may just be the most important advance ever to cure and prevent malnutrition.

Crazy Facts

In the 1400's a law was set forth that a man was not allowed to beat his wife with a stick no thicker than his thumb. Hence we have "the rule of thumb".

Many years ago in Scotland, a new game was invented. It was ruled "Gentlemen Only...Ladies Forbidden"...and thus the word GOLF entered into the English language.

The first couple to be shown in bed together on prime time TV was Fred and Wilma Flintstone.

  • Every day more money is printed for Monopoly than the US Treasury.
  • Men can read smaller print than women can; women can hear better.
  • Coca-Cola was originally green.
  • It is impossible to lick your elbow.
  • The average number of people airborne over the US any given hour: 61,000
  • Intelligent people have more zinc and copper in their hair.
  • The first novel ever written on a typewriter: Tom Sawyer.

Each king in a deck of playing cards represents a great king in history:

  • Spades - King David
  • Hearts - Charlemagne
  • Clubs -Alexander, the Great
  • Diamonds - Julius Caesar

Q. If you were to spell out numbers, how far would you have to go until you would find the letter "A"?
A. One thousand

Q. What do bullet-proof vests, fire escapes, windshield wipers, and laser printers all have in common?
A. All invented by women.

Q. What is the only food that doesn't spoil?
A. Honey

In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase "goodnight, sleep tight."

It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month, which we know today as the honeymoon.

In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts... So in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them "Mind your pints and quarts, and settle down." It's where we get the phrase "mind your P's and Q's"

Many years ago in England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the rim, or handle, of their ceramic cups. When they needed a refill, they used the whistle to get some service. "Wet your whistle" is the phrase inspired by this practice.

Don't delete this just because it looks weird. Believe it or not, you can read it.

Colbert for Prez
Good lord, this just may be the best thing that ever (maybe, sorta) happened to presidential politics. Stephen Colbert announced he planned to run for president and while nobody knows whether or not to take him seriously, he's got both parties worried. Particularly in South Carolina, where he aims to get his name on the ballot for both the Democratic and Republican primaries (he explained the strategy by saying "I can't lose twice") as the state's 'favorite son.'" Buy Local Berkeley

The "Buy Local Berkeley" Campaign
Berkeley's Office of Economic Development estimates that 85% of Berkeley businesses have less than 5 employees. The Buy Local Berkeley Campaign will celebrate and strengthen our small businesses. This city-wide effort is designed to bring more attention on our retail sector - especially the independently owned businesses that create the unique character of our City. The campaign will encourage residents, workers, and institutions to shift their purchases to Berkeley based businesses when ever possible.
The Buy Local Berkeley campaign is a project of the Berkeley Business District Network (BBDN). We have kicked off the "Buy Local Berkeley Happy Hour" to encourage our community to get together and talk about business vitality. The Happy Hour takes place on the 4th Wednesday of each month.
If you want to receive the announcements for Buy Local Berkeley Campaign and Happy Hour, submit your request to join the DBA's email list to info@downtownberkeley.org
